Beer Making Steps
These are the steps I use to make virtually all of my malt extract beer recipes.
|
- Put 2 gallons of water in a large brewing pot
- Put crushed grains in a brewing bag and add grain bag to pot
- Bring water to 150 degrees then turn off heat, cover, and let sit for 30 minutes
- Remove grain bag from the pot
- Bring wort to a boil, remove from heat, and stir in liquid or dried malt extract
- Return to heat and bring to a boil
- Put bittering hops into brewing bag and add hop bag to boiling wort
- After 60 minutes, remove from heat, remove bittering hop bag from the pot
- Put flavoring hops into brewing bag and steep hop bag in hot wort
- After 15 minutes, remove flavoring hop bag from the pot
- Stir in honey (if used), and any spices (if used)
- Add several large hunks of ice to brew pot to cool the liquid a little
- Put several large hunks of ice in plastic primary fermenter
- Pour wort over ice in primary fermenter
- Bring water level up to 5 gallons
- Cool to room temp, measure and record SG
- Pitch rehydrated yeast
- Ferment in primary for 10-14 days
- If high SG (more than 8lbs malt and/or honey) then rack to secondary and age for a couple months
- Rack to bottle filling bucket
- Heat 3/4 cup priming sugar and 1 cup water in a sauce pan until sugar is dissolved
- Add liquid priming sugar to bottle filling bucket
- Fill and cap bottles
- Carbonation takes about 10 days, high gravity brews will require more time to age and carbonate
